All is Guu.

The biggest problem Guu has at this time is our kitty, Mac.

Mac has been Guu’s number one fan for a few weeks now. He has suspected she was his long lost mommy, but now with the arrival of the Isms, it is an absolute certainty for Mac. Guu is not convinced and will not be convinced. She is remarkably tolerant. Mac has offered to walk on a leash, eat dog food, and bark if he must, but Guu is steadfast. Mac can not be part of her Isms. Mac consoles his rejection by hanging out with the adult Havs. He sleeps with them. He grooms them, but it does not take the place of his one true love, Guu.

In the Harbor, we aspire to greatness. Day three marks the beginning of early neurological stimulation.

Guu has much to teach. I have much to learn.

Each litter must have a theme. Sometimes the theme comes to me before the litter and other times, nothing. This morning as I washed and cleaned the green goo off Guu’s back side, it came to me. The world according to Guu. Guu’s to live by. Like:”If the Guu fits, wear it” and “a Guu in the hand is worth two in the bush”. More on this later. We have seven beautiful, thriving puppies and now we have our litter theme. With out any planning, a plan is coming together.

The boys.

In the crazy of whelping Guu’s litter, Guu managed to eat placenta. I want to dispel the notion that a bitch should eat placenta.  By the time of whelp, there is nothing redeeming left to the placenta. It will cause your bitch horrible diarrhea. If possible don’t allow your Guu to eat placenta. If she does, you will need to be very proactive about getting her diarrhea in hand. The bitch has a litter of puppies to care for the last thing she needs is diarrhea on top of all her other responsibilities. Guu is eating Pro Plan Performance as her base kibble. I crumble half a patty of Stella & Chewy’s dehydrated chicken. I add Nature’s Farmacy Digestive Enhancer, Ultimate, and Gestamate in to the mix. To help get her stools firm I add 1/3 a can of Iams Intestinal Formula canned dog food. This is a great food to have on hand any time you notice loose stool. Yes, I am an expert on the study of stool consistency. I should have a doctorate in the theory of stool consistency:)

The Girls.

My bitches seem to lose a lot of iron during whelp. For this I add one ml. of Petinic twice a day. Lastly, warm water and mix. I offer this meal four times per day. Guu is eating and drinking very well. For the green goo I spoke of earlier, I am giving Guu Amoxicillin twice a day.

Don’t worry, this is all Guu for the course. Guu will be firm and green free by the end of the week.

Guu would have a planned C-secton for her last litter. A bitches progesterone is supposed to drop very low 24 hours before whelp (no one explained this to Guu). We checked her progesterone level on Monday. It was very high (no C-section).  At 1:50 Tuesday morning, Guu jumped on the bed and let out a half bark, half howl. I cooed, “Guu, is today the day? Are you ready to go to the hospital?” At 1:55, I heard a puppy squeal. Guu was waiting patiently for me to move my big head off her whelping pillow. I scrambled around, found my hemostats(second puppy), surgical scissors, whelping box(third puppy), dental floss, towels(fourth puppy)…oh to hell with it!

It wasn’t pretty, but we got through it. Guu’s last litter was so carefully planned, the sire (she had another boy in mind), the progesterone (what’s progesterone?), C-section (Guu does not like needles), whelping area (Guu prefers hu-mom’s pillow), and the date (she will get back to you).

Guu has always had a plan of her own. I love this about Guu. I hope that all her babies are full of Guu style surprises. It reminds me not to take the plan or myself too seriously.

Seven puppies by 6 am., four females and three males.

Aster is 20 weeks old. He is an extremely bright and affectionate Havanese. He responds very well to basic training. He would do very well in a home interested in obedience or therapy work. He is a sturdy Havanese. It is difficult to predict the adult size of a Havanese, but he will not be a small or fragile Havanese, expect 13 – 16 pounds.   If you would like to be considered, please take the time to fill out our questionnaire in the puppy section of the site.

I feed Purina Pro Plan Performance as my base kibble. I crumble a 1/2 of a patty of Stella & Chewy’s Dehydrated Chicken Patties. I am also a huge fan of Nature’s Farmacy. I add Nature’s Farmacy Ultimate and Digestive Enhancer. Last, I add a little warm tap water and mix. The purpose of the warm tap water is to increase the smell of the food as dogs are largely motivated by scent. I offer this meal morning and night.
